The spirits see us as unlimited in what we can actually do to achieve wellness, happiness and health. The limits we feel are the limits that we create and then lock into our consciousness and subconscious. These limits often show up in our dreams. Taking our power back in the dream state leads to wellness in the “awakened” state of consciousness.
I often hear people be frustrated when they can’t remember their dreams. They feel as if they are not “up to par” or they are deficient in some way as a dreamer. Again this is a projection of our Western culture, that says you are “less than.” From a shamanic perspective there is a dismemberment that happens to the psyche in a dream. Dismemberment is a shamanic term that means to take someone or something apart so that it can REMEMBER its truth.
Human beings are naturally divine, capable, creator beings on the planet. However they forget this truth and go through life acting limited and unable. One of the dismemberment phases of dreaming is the dismemberment of these limitations and the ability to REMEMBER the power and the abilities that you actually have and are willing to take in to the dream time.
Shamanically speaking when a person has no memory of their dream, and sleeps soundly and deeply, it is because they completely dismember and go back into the light of creation. They rest there and they have the ability to reassimilate completely ANEW. However what most people do in the reassimilation process of reentry into their body is they put themselves back together exactly as they were before. They don’t take advantage of the power they hold to reassimilate healthy, or different. Shamanically speaking each slumber allows you to go back into creation and change what isn’t working for you. So instead of being deficient because you didn’t remember your dreams you were given the opportunity to return to the divine and be at peace. It is a beautiful state of deep reconnection.
I’d love to hear your stories of dreaming, dismemberment, and reassimilating. Just click on the “no comment/comment” link at the end of this post!

What about prophetic dreams? What is going on when those happen? I have had several times in life when I’ve dreamed in detail about an event that happens within the next few days. These are significant events, like deaths and natural disasters. Where do those come from?

Hello Jan,
While I was searching I found your blog.
I had my first dismemberment dream last night which I’d like to share with you, if I may.
~~~~
I remembered a painful dismemberment in the dark. I am wandering around with many “X X X’s” shaped band-aids joining my limbs to my body – and there is still a little flesh hanging off my back where there are no band-aids to seal the join.
I am walking around glaring at (a disliked woman’s) “family members” and at my distant cousins, whom I don’t know.
I *KNOW* that they are the ones who have dismembered me – but they will not admit it, they will not acknowledge it and they are ignoring me and my accusatory stares.
——
The meaning seems clear to me: That the dismemberment has already taken place (the stripping away of old identity) …but I haven’t been put back together properly yet!
I’m only attached by bandaids – and have not fully assumed my new identity. I am too busy looking to blame distantly related people (or people who have long gone) and have past injustices vindicated – than to go about completing the transformation properly.
What do you think?
Best wishes to you,
Clio
In shamanism you can journey to the past or to the future. There is no limitation. What has happened, what is happening now and what is going to happen simultaneously exist. Dreaming about the future or a prophetic dream is just like journeying. The purpose of journeying to the future is to see what is energetically in motion. If you like what is in motion you can add energy to the event happening, if you don’t like what is in motion you can change the energy and thus change the probability of it happening. Energy is in motion because of a probability that has been put into place; energy is being added to a situation in the un-manifest. As more energy is added it will become a reality. When this energy is stopped or changed the probability also changes. Depending on how intensely you move to create this change will have a direct proportion to it changing.
My daughter is a huge prophetic dreamer. I listen to her dreams, especially when they involve a family member. If someone is in danger I intercept accordingly to change the outcome. It is part of the power we have.
Hi Clio ~ I think you are right on with your conclusion. A dismemberment is for healing and realignment. It is to REMEMBER your truth of radiance. You haven’t reassembled because you are still caught in your blame or injustices. The universe does not want you to reassemble with these lower frequency energies – you would be no better than where you started. These lower frequencies are not part of your radiance.
As you let go of these resistances you will re-assimilate anew. The universe is always trying to get you to evolve and move you from your egoic self to your true self.
Take it to the next level. Envision your dream as being in radiance and loving all people, no matter what they have done or how they have harmed.
Jan,
Ok let me see if I have this right. The deep dreamless sleep allows me to go back into creation and change what is not working for me and reassimilate when I come back.
What I am wondering is how do I reassimilate in my real self if I do not remember the dismemberment. I am not sure I am saying what I want to say here so let me put it another way. If I do not remember the dream how can I claim my power to recreate? I would think I would need to be aware of my dismemberment and my return to creation in order to claim power. There seems to be a need for some level of awaremenss here to reclaim power. Yet, I am not conscious or aware of anything. Does this question make sense?
I have anwsered the call of a shaman. I have journeied many times, but one journey has made a lasting impression. I was in trance and instead of going to lower or middle world, I went to the upper world. I as a being sailed backwards watching the cosmos pass under me. It was beautiful and no where near explainable. The brilliance of light shown through my entire exsistance, as though I was light as well. Then there were no planets or space, just complete understanding. I was in a warm and empty setting both dark and light. The only word that can come to mid is Harmony. This was greater then any pleasant feeling I had ever had. I had taken a ride on the ribbon of life and was the blue light! There are no words that come close to that feeling. Thank you for your time and support!
Loyd ~ What an incredibly beautiful experience! Thank you for sharing it with those that read this blog. Many times there are spiritual moments that are indescribable even with the best of word-smithing. However, the lasting impact of the experience in your understanding can erase doubt, calm fears, and bring in a KNOWING of the divine, a knowing of your own divinity, and a knowing of the vast love, oneness, and perfection of all. I hope that you savor this experience and bring it up regularly to review in your mind. It has great potential that is still unfolding.
Blessings to you always! Jan
Greetings Rosemary!
You ask good questions and I feel that you are deeply exploring your own nature in this process. When we bring things to the conscious mind, we can set focused intention and create change with awareness. Here is an example that many people seem to desire: Let’s say that you want to improve relationships in your life. You aren’t remembering your dreams, but you can set an intention before you sleep of dismembering fears, communication problems, holding on to grievances, not feeling lovable, or any other type of behavior or belief that is at the core of faulty relationships. You sleep, you dream, you go into the light. You might not remember your dream, but the intention still does its work. You awaken. Instead of lamenting that you DIDN’T remember anything, which immediately puts you in a NOT ENOUGH SCENARIO again, decide to wake up and celebrate yourself. Such as the first thing that you think is, I love my life, I declare myself new, I will open myself a little more today of being free from my past and seeing the good things about me instead of the things I don’t like.
All of this is in alignment with the new you being born in the morning. Getting your first thoughts wrapped around what you want to be celebrating endorses the process. I’ll be talking more about this in my May newsletter. If you would like to receive it, click here.
